The multi-pro tailgate is standard on SLT and Denali Sierra models in 2019. If you're not familiar with the GMC truck lineup, you're missing out on premium interiors and features not found in many other brands. The new 2019 tailgate is just another of GMC's tricked out features on their elevated truck lineup. How on earth and who in the world decided to try to upgrade the tailgate of all things! GMC, that's who, through their GMC Innovation Lab. The Innovation Lab is an internal version of "Shark Tank" where engineers pitch their new ideas and the tricked out tailgate is an idea that has come to life! How Does the 2019 GMC Tailgate Work?
If you're wondering whether the tailgate is tricky, let us help. With just two buttons right on the tailgate, you can quickly and simply choose from multiple configurations. First and foremost, you should know that the re-invented tailgate can easily fold down just like any typical tailgate would. Next, you can fold down a small portion of the top of the tailgate to create a ledge or a shelf. This shelf truly redefines the tailgate party! It creates the perfect ledge for you and your buddies to line up, rest your beer or burger, and prep for the game! Not only that, there's an outlet available right on the back bumper, so hook up your radio or tv for that matter to really create the perfect tailgate party.
Are you in the construction business? Out on the road? Rest your laptop on this ledge and plug it in if need be. This tailgate redefines the idea of working on the road - you can literally work right from the tailgate itself!
Okay, so you have your normal tailgate function and a ledge perfect for partying or playing. What else, you wonder? Fold down the "ledge", then fold down the tailgate as you normally would, and finally, fold down the built in step! Voila! Step right up into your tailgate with ease! Need a little more help? Fold out the hand grab bar and you're golden!

In this new Sierra, you will find an app full of checklists to help newbies attach a trailer. Frankly, if you're a seasoned professional, this is incredibly unnecessary but let's face it, some in the new generation may find this kind of assistance reassuring! The rearview camera has a Hitch Mode which I find extremely useful for the few times I hook up to a trailer... or from the writer, for my boyfriend to direct himself so I don't piss him off during the process of directing him! The Hitch Mode on the camera will allow you to see how far off you are from the trailer ball, plus some steering guidance on which way to cut the wheel to line things up just right.

Carbon Fiber Bed Box in the 2019 GMC Sierra
GMC reinvented the tailgate for 2019 and that includes an optional carbon-fiber bed box dubbed CarbonPro by GMC. While the steel bed box is replaced with carbo-fiber, the fenders will remain steel. These bed boxes are truly unique with 1-inch carbon fiber threads in a composite and a process that solidifies the carbon fibers in the plastic. The pros of this bed box are that it is 62 pounds lighter than its steel equivalent. GMC went through a lot of testing and adjusting to get the carbon fiber bed just right. The bed is manufactured by heating the material, putting it into a press, and then cooling it down. According to GM's lead engineer for the Sierra, Tim Herrick, over 100 prototypes were made before finding the perfect process for the CarbonPro. The goal is to provide best-in-class dent, scratch, and corrosion resistance with this box. Maybe the days of bedliners are over with the CarboPro box. Back in 2001, GM had the first full-size truck with a composite bed. Seventeen years later, the CarbonPro is a composite bed light years ahead of its predecessor.

We think the new tailgate rolled out by GMC in 2019 is pretty darn cool. Technology is ever-changing and it's exciting to see an engineering feat on something as practical and simple as the tailgate. Form definitely meets function in the 2019 GMC Sierra!

The tailgate has two sections:
- An outer tailgate (in a U shape)
- An Inner Tailgate (the inside of the U)
When the inner and outer tailgate operate together, they function like a standard tailgate. Operate them separately and you have a unique tailgate with plenty of custom functions.
